Why do some Standardbreds retire at an early age? PDF Print E-mail
As in any sport, not every individual is going to be able to perform at the highest level.  Just like humans, some Standardbreds can be lazy, too slow or simply not interested in racing.  If this is the case, this can often be determined before the horse is even raced, and the owner/trainer will re-home the horse rather than continue training.  Sometimes younger horses may be injured (either racing or at home in the paddock).  These horses may be quite sound after a good rest, which might not be financially viable for a racing trainer to undertake.
